The difference between the virtual safety car and the safety car is straightforward: the safety car is a real car that leads the field at reduced speed and bunches everyone nose to tail, while the virtual safety car (VSC) uses no car at all — drivers simply hold a minimum lap-time delta so the gaps between them stay roughly frozen. How the virtual safety car works

That erases any gaps — a big lead vanishes — and sets up a rolling restart where the leader controls the pace and racing only resumes at the start-finish line.

That is why the two neutralisations have such different strategic weight. A VSC is relatively benign for a leader; a safety car can hand their hard-won advantage to the entire field in one lap.

When each one is used

Race control’s choice comes down to how big the hazard is and whether people need to be on the racing line.

  • VSC: enough for a hazard that needs caution but not grouping — clearing debris, a car stopped safely off-line, a brief issue that marshals can handle without standing in the racing line.
  • Safety car: used when marshals, a crane, or recovery vehicles need to be on or beside the track, when there is a heavy crash, or when conditions are too poor for a delta alone to keep everyone safe.
