How to play

1. Type any of the 2,098 active NFL players into the search box and hit guess.
2. Read the eight clues that come back — team, conference, division, position, height, age, jersey number, and experience.
3. Green means an exact match, amber means close (within 2 inches, 2 years, 5 jersey numbers, or 2 seasons), and the arrow on numeric clues points toward the answer.
4. Use what you learn from each clue to narrow the field with your remaining guesses.
5. Name the mystery player before your 8 guesses run out — everyone gets the same player each day, and the puzzle resets at midnight UTC.

Type any active NFL player and hit guess. You are not limited to stars — all 2,098 rostered players are valid guesses, so you can burn an early one on a player you know sits at a specific height or number just to bracket the answer. The daily answer is always drawn from a shorter list of 456 genuine starters, so it is always someone you have a fair chance of naming.

The fastest way in is usually a quarterback. Position is a hard yes-or-no, so a wrong guess at quarterback still tells you the answer is one of the other seven position groups — and the height and age arrows narrow the field faster than team guesses do, because 32 teams is a lot of ground to cover four cells at a time.

Everyone gets the same player on the same day, and the puzzle rolls over at midnight UTC. Run out of patience waiting? Unlimited mode gives you a new player immediately, drawn from the same list, free and without an account. Weddle, the biggest game in this genre, added an official unlimited mode of its own, so this is table stakes rather than a trick — but plenty of the smaller guessing games still hold you to one puzzle a day for no good reason.

What the clues mean

Team, conference, division and position are yes-or-no — there is no "close" on a team, because conference and division already tell you that. The four numeric clues show an arrow pointing toward the answer.

Where the data comes from

Rosters and attributes come from nflverse, the open NFL data project, under CC BY 4.0. Ages and years of experience are calculated fresh each day rather than stored, so they never drift out of date. This game uses player names and factual details only — no photographs, no silhouettes, and no team logos or marks.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an archive of past daily answers?

Not right now — Guess the NFL Player only shows today's mystery player, and there's no way to reopen or replay an old date. If you want more reps, switch to Unlimited mode, which draws a fresh player from the same pool as often as you like; it just doesn't count toward your daily streak or stats.

Does the game track a streak?

Yes. Finishing a Daily puzzle updates a running streak, your best-ever streak, games played, win rate, and a breakdown of which guess number you usually solve on — all saved to your browser with no account needed. Unlimited games aren't scored, and missing a day resets the streak to zero.

Can I share my result?

Yes. After a Daily game ends, tap "Share result" to copy a spoiler-free grid of green, amber, and black squares plus the puzzle number and a link — the same format Wordle made popular. It never names the player, so it's safe to post before friends have had a chance to play.

Is there a hint or reveal button if I get stuck?

No, there's no hint or reveal feature. Every guess already works as a hint — even a wrong one confirms or rules out team, conference, division, and position, and the arrows on height, age, number, and experience tell you which direction to move. Run out of guesses and the answer is simply shown at the end.

Is there a leaderboard or global scoring?

No, there's no global leaderboard — this is a solo game. Your "score" is how many of the 8 guesses you needed, and the game privately tracks that in your browser as a streak, win rate, and a distribution of which guess number you usually solve on. Nothing is compared against other players.

Is there a hard mode?

No, there's a single difficulty. Every guess returns all eight clues in full every time, and nothing forces you to reuse a previously confirmed clue on later guesses the way Wordle's hard mode does. For a bigger challenge, try ignoring the numeric arrows or set yourself a target of solving in 4 guesses or fewer.

What time does the daily puzzle reset in my timezone?

The puzzle rolls over at midnight UTC. During Daylight Saving Time that's 8 PM Eastern, 7 PM Central, 6 PM Mountain, and 5 PM Pacific the evening before; during Standard Time it's 7 PM, 6 PM, 5 PM, and 4 PM respectively. Unlimited mode is available anytime and doesn't wait for the reset.

How is this different from your NFL Wordle game?

It isn't a different game. NFL Wordle runs on the exact same daily engine as Guess the NFL Player, with the same puzzle number and the same mystery player each day — just under a different name for people searching that term. Playing one is the same as playing the other.

Is the game colorblind-accessible?

Yes. Color never carries a verdict alone — every clue also gets a screen-reader label of hit, close, or miss, and numeric clues add a directional arrow pointing toward the answer, so the board is fully readable without distinguishing green from amber. The shareable result grid uses green, amber, and black squares that also differ in brightness.

Can I guess practice-squad or inactive players?

No. Only players who were on an active NFL roster when the player pool was built are valid guesses — practice-squad players, inactive players, and free agents aren't in the searchable list. That keeps every valid guess a real, findable name instead of an obscure one nobody would recognize.

Is there strategy beyond starting with a quarterback?

Once position is settled, lean on the four numeric clues — height, age, jersey number, and experience each come back with a direction arrow, so one guess narrows a range instead of just confirming yes or no. Save a guess purely for team, conference, or division for later, since those three only pay off once you've already narrowed the position group.
