Longest Winning Streak in NFL History

The New England Patriots hold the NFL record for the longest winning streak including playoffs, at 21 straight games across the 2003 and 2004 seasons. The run stretched from the end of 2003 through a Super Bowl title and into the following season, and because it was never interrupted, it is the benchmark for a continuous streak.

There is a catch that trips people up. The Indianapolis Colts actually won more games in a row, 23, but only counting regular-season games, because a playoff loss fell in the middle of their run. So the honest answer depends on which record you mean: continuous including playoffs, or regular-season games only. Here is both, kept clearly apart.

The two numbers at the top answer two different questions. The Colts’ 23 is the most consecutive regular-season wins. The Patriots’ 21 is the most consecutive wins of any kind, playoffs included, without a single loss anywhere in between.

The Patriots’ 21 and why it is the true streak record

New England’s run began after a September 2003 loss and did not end until October 2004. In between came the rest of 2003, a playoff march, a Super Bowl win, and a strong start to 2004. Nothing broke it, which is the point: for a streak record, an uninterrupted stretch through the postseason is worth more than a longer run with a loss buried in it.

That is why the 21 is the number most record books lead with. It counts every game the Patriots played, in order, and every one was a win. When a streak survives a full playoff run, it means the team kept winning when the opponents and the stakes were toughest.

The Colts’ 23 and the regular-season asterisk

Indianapolis won its final nine games of 2008 and its first 14 of 2009, a 23-game regular-season winning streak that is a record in its own category. The reason it does not top the overall list is a 2008 playoff loss to San Diego, which fell right in the middle of those regular-season wins.

So both statements are true, and both are records: the Colts hold the regular-season mark at 23, and the Patriots hold the all-inclusive mark at 21. Any source that calls one of them “the NFL record” without saying which category is only telling half the story.

Streaks versus perfect seasons

A long streak is not the same as an undefeated season. The 1972 Dolphins went 17-0 across a full year and playoffs, the only perfect season in NFL history, then extended it to 18 straight with the first win of 1973. That streak spanned two seasons, while the perfect season sits inside one.
