Which NFL Team Has the Most Super Bowl Wins?
On this page6
The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots hold the record for the most Super Bowl wins, with six each. No other franchise has more than five, and after 60 Super Bowls those two sit clear at the top of the NFL’s championship ladder.
The tie is close but not identical underneath. Pittsburgh reached its six titles from eight Super Bowl appearances; New England needed 12 trips to win the same number. One franchise is efficient, the other relentless. Below them the table thins out fast, and a surprising share of the league has nothing on it at all.

Here is every Super Bowl winner ranked by titles, current through Super Bowl LX in February 2026, when the Seattle Seahawks beat the Patriots 29-13. Wins and appearances are both listed, because they tell different stories.

Nineteen franchises have won at least one Super Bowl. The 60 titles handed out since January 1967 are split among those 19 clubs.
Steelers and Patriots: same total, different route
The Steelers built four of their six titles inside six years in the 1970s, winning Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV, then added two more in 2006 and 2009. Their run is compact, weighted toward one great decade.
New England’s six all came this century, between the 2001 and 2018 seasons, spread across an 18-year window with Tom Brady at quarterback for every one of them. The Patriots also carry the heavier loss column: six wins from 12 Super Bowls means six defeats too, more Super Bowl losses than any other team shares. Pittsburgh has lost only twice on the sport’s biggest stage.
The teams that won back-to-back titles
Winning one Super Bowl is hard; defending it is rarer still. Eight franchises have gone back-to-back: the Green Bay Packers (Super Bowls I and II), Miami Dolphins (VII and VIII), Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers (XXIII and XXIV), Dallas Cowboys (XXVII and XXVIII), Denver Broncos (XXXII and XXXIII), New England Patriots (XXXVIII and XXXIX) and Kansas City Chiefs (LVII and LVIII).
The Steelers are the only team to do it twice, stringing together IX-X and then XIII-XIV in the same decade. What no one has ever done is win three in a row. The Chiefs came the closest in recent memory, taking LVII and LVIII before losing Super Bowl LIX to the Eagles, so the three-peat remains the one dynasty landmark the league has never seen.
Appearances versus wins: why the two lists differ
A Super Bowl appearance and a Super Bowl win are not the same record, and the gap matters. The Buffalo Bills reached four straight Super Bowls from 1991 through 1994 and lost every one, so they hold four appearances and zero titles. The Minnesota Vikings are 0-4 as well. Denver has played in eight Super Bowls, tied for the second most of any team, but converted only three.
At the other extreme, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Ravens have never lost one: both are a perfect two-for-two. If you ranked teams by win percentage in the game rather than raw titles, those two would sit above franchises with more hardware. When someone claims a team is “built for the big game,” the appearances-to-wins ratio is the number worth checking.
The teams with no Super Bowl wins
Thirteen of the NFL’s 32 teams have never won a Super Bowl. Nine of them have at least reached one and lost: the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers all have appearances but no trophy.
Four have never played in one at all: the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. The Browns and Lions are the long-suffering cases, both charter members of the modern league who have watched all 60 Super Bowls from the outside. For a sense of where these clubs rank off the field, our roundup of the most valuable sports teams in the world shows several title-less franchises still worth billions.
How to read Super Bowl records across eras
The Super Bowl began after the 1966 season, so every title is post-1966 and directly comparable in that sense. What is not comparable is the surrounding difficulty. Early Super Bowls followed a 14-game regular season; today’s champions grind through a 17-game schedule and an expanded playoff field, so a modern run to the title clears more games than a 1970s one did. Free agency and the salary cap, introduced in 1994, also make sustained dynasties harder to build now than in the Steelers’ or Cowboys’ peak years.
None of that changes the raw count, but it is why comparing Pittsburgh’s 1970s four-in-six to a modern team’s spread of titles is not a like-for-like match. The trophies are equal; the roads to them were not.
For the quarterbacks who chased these rings, see the most Super Bowl wins by a quarterback, where the record sits with one player rather than a tie. And if you want to see where these championship teams actually play, our guide to the biggest NFL stadiums ranks the venues by capacity. Six titles is the mark to beat; only two teams have ever reached it, and no one has managed a seventh.
Frequently asked questions
Have any NFL teams never played in a Super Bowl?+
Four have never reached one: the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. The Browns and Lions predate the Super Bowl era but have gone the whole run without an appearance; the Jaguars and Texans joined as expansion franchises in 1995 and 2002.
Which team has lost the most Super Bowls?+
The New England Patriots and Denver Broncos have each lost five, the most of any franchise. New England offsets theirs with six wins from 12 trips; Denver's five losses sit against three wins. The Buffalo Bills lost four in a row from 1991 to 1994 without ever winning.
Did the Chiefs win three Super Bowls in a row?+
No. Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV, then LVII and LVIII in back-to-back seasons, but lost Super Bowl LIX to Philadelphia in February 2025, ending the bid for a three-peat. No NFL team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls.
Does the Vince Lombardi Trophy go to the team or stay with the league?+
Each winning team keeps its own Vince Lombardi Trophy permanently; a new one is made every year rather than passed along like some trophies in other sports. A franchise with six titles therefore holds six separate trophies.
