The record holder: Bill Belichick and 6 titles

Belichick’s six championships came between the 2001 and 2018 seasons, all in partnership with quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots’ run combined a ruthless defensive philosophy with a willingness to reinvent the team’s approach year to year, and it produced a sustained peak that no franchise has matched in the modern era.

It is worth noting that Belichick also earned two Super Bowl rings earlier in his career as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator, but those do not count toward his head-coaching record. His six as a head coach are the mark everyone else is chasing.

Noll and the great dynasty coaches

Chuck Noll built the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1970s dynasty, winning four Super Bowls in six seasons with a team stacked with future Hall of Famers. Bill Walsh’s San Francisco 49ers and Joe Gibbs’s Washington teams each claimed three in the 1980s and early 1990s, and Gibbs did his with three different starting quarterbacks, a rare feat. Andy Reid and the active chase

Andy Reid is the only active coach in the top group, with three titles for the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2019, 2022 and 2023 seasons. Paired with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Reid has built a modern dynasty that keeps reaching the Super Bowl, making him the clearest threat to move up the list.
