NFL Wordle

A Wordle for football fans: one hidden NFL player a day, 8 guesses to crack him. Instead of letters, every guess lights up across eight attributes — team, conference, division, position, height, age, jersey number and years in the league. Green is an exact match, amber is close, grey is a miss, and an arrow tells you which way the real answer sits.

How to play, step by step

  1. Type any active NFL player's name into the guess box and hit Guess (or Enter).
  2. Read the row that comes back: green means an exact match, amber means close, grey means a miss — and the four numeric clues (height, age, number, experience) show an arrow pointing toward the real answer.
  3. Use team, conference, division and position as hard yes-or-no signals, and use the arrows to bracket the numbers, to close in on who it is.
  4. Keep guessing — you get 8 tries total per daily puzzle.
  5. Solve it and the game shows "Got it in X," your streak and your win rate; use all 8 guesses without solving it and the mystery player's name and details are revealed immediately.
  6. Tap "Share result" to copy a spoiler-free emoji grid plus your score and puzzle number, ready to paste into a group chat.
  7. Come back after midnight UTC for a new daily player, or hit Unlimited any time for a fresh player right now.

How NFL Wordle works

If you have played Wordle, the loop is familiar — a fixed number of guesses, colour feedback after each one, and everybody chasing the same answer on the same day. The twist is that the secret here is a person, not a word, so your feedback is football data rather than letters. Type any active player and the row fills in: same team turns green, same conference or division turns green, and the four numbers — height, age, number and experience — turn green on an exact hit or amber when you are within range, with an up or down arrow pointing toward the answer.

All 2,098 rostered players are legal guesses, so you can spend an early one purely to bracket a number — a known tall lineman to pin down height, a veteran to read the experience arrow. The daily answer is always pulled from a tighter list of 456 recognisable starters, so it is never someone you have no chance of naming.

Everyone gets the same player each day and the puzzle resets at midnight UTC, so your score is directly comparable — that is the whole point of the shareable grid. Out of guesses or just want more? Unlimited mode deals a fresh player instantly, free and without an account.

What each colour means

Clue Green Amber
TeamSame team
Conf / DivSame conference / division
PosSame position group
HtExactWithin 2 inches
AgeExactWithin 2 years
No.ExactWithin 5
ExpExactWithin 2 seasons

Team, conference, division and position are yes-or-no — there is no amber on a team, because the conference and division cells already carry that partial information. The four numeric clues are the ones that show an arrow.

NFL Wordle vs. Guess the NFL Player

They are the same game. "NFL Wordle" is just what a lot of people call this style of daily player-guessing puzzle, after Wordle made the format famous. If you would rather play it under that name, Guess the NFL Player is the same daily answer and the same grid. Fancy a different sport? Try Guess the Wrestler or the daily Sports Connections puzzle.

Where the data comes from

Rosters and attributes come from nflverse, the open NFL data project, under CC BY 4.0. Ages and years of experience are recalculated every day rather than stored, so they never drift. NFL Wordle is an independent, unofficial game — it uses player names and factual details only, with no photographs, silhouettes, team logos or marks, and no affiliation with the NFL or any team.

Frequently asked questions

Is NFL Wordle affiliated with the NFL?

No. NFL Wordle is an independent, unofficial fan game, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by the NFL or any team. It uses player names and factual public details only — team, position, height, age, jersey number, experience — with no photos, silhouettes, team logos, or marks anywhere in the game.

What's today's NFL Wordle answer?

There's no answer key on this page — revealing it would spoil the puzzle for everyone still playing. Everyone gets the same mystery player each day, and the row of clues (team, conference, division, position, height, age, number, experience) with directional arrows is enough to work it out within the eight guesses. If you run out of tries, the game reveals the answer on the results screen.

Is there an archive of past NFL Wordle puzzles?

Yes. The answers & archive page lists every puzzle NFL Wordle has ever run, each hidden behind its own spoiler toggle, plus today's progressive hints and a gated full reveal if you get stuck. The in-game board itself still only plays today's puzzle — if you want more than one in a sitting, switch to Unlimited mode, which deals a fresh player instantly from the same recognisable-starter pool, free and without an account.

Are there hints in NFL Wordle?

No dedicated hint button inside the game itself — every guess there doubles as a hint. If you want an actual hint without guessing, the answers page has three progressive hints (position, then team/conference/division, then college/entry year) that never name the player, plus a gated full reveal if you'd rather just see it.

Does NFL Wordle track a streak?

Yes. A win extends your current streak by one and updates your best streak; a loss, or skipping a day, resets the current streak to zero. Streak, best streak, games played, win rate, and a breakdown of how many guesses your wins took are all saved to your own browser via localStorage — there is no account behind it.

Is there a leaderboard?

No global leaderboard or head-to-head mode — streak, win rate, and guess distribution are personal stats saved only in your browser. To compare with friends, use "Share result" after a daily game: it copies a spoiler-free emoji grid plus your score and puzzle number, ready to paste into a group chat so you can compare guess counts.

How is score calculated in NFL Wordle?

There's no points system — your result is simply how many of the eight guesses it took, shown as X/8 (or a plain X if you didn't get it). That number, plus win or loss, is what feeds your streak and the saved guess-count distribution. Fewer guesses is a better result; there's no separate scoring formula beyond that.

Is there an NFL Wordle app?

No native app to download. NFL Wordle runs entirely in your web browser at this page, on desktop or mobile, and needs no install. It does need an active internet connection and JavaScript enabled to load; there is no offline mode. Progress and stats are saved to that specific browser, so a new browser or device starts a fresh streak.

How is NFL Wordle different from Weddle, Griddle, Huddle, or Guess the NFL Player?

NFL Wordle and Guess the NFL Player on this site are literally the same game and the same daily answer — just two names for the same puzzle. Weddle, Griddle, and Huddle are separate, independently run football-guessing games from other developers, not affiliated with this site. What sets ours apart: eight clues per guess (not just team), a directional arrow on every numeric clue, the full active roster as legal guesses, and a free Unlimited mode.

What's the best first guess or strategy?

Open with a player whose team and position you already know cold — team, conference, division, and position are hard yes-or-no clues, so a "wrong" guess still confirms or rules out a whole slice of the league. Then use the numeric arrows: a known-tall lineman brackets height, a rookie or 15-year veteran brackets experience. Chase the arrows rather than guessing at random, and eight tries goes a long way.

Which players are eligible — are rookies or retired players included?

All players on current NFL rosters are legal guesses — including rookies. Retired and historical players aren't in the game at all; data is pulled fresh from current rosters, not career archives. The daily mystery player, however, is always drawn from a shorter list of recognisable regular starters and snap-count leaders, so the answer itself is never an obscure practice-squad name.

Does NFL Wordle work on mobile?

Yes. It's a responsive web page, not an app, so it works in any modern mobile browser — Safari, Chrome, and others — the same as on desktop. No download, no account, and no app-store install required. Just open this page on your phone and play.

What happens if I don't guess it in 8 tries?

The board shows 'Out of guesses,' immediately reveals the mystery player's name and full details, and your streak resets to zero. A loss still counts toward your games-played total and win rate. From there you can share the result grid or jump straight into Unlimited mode for another player right away.

Is my progress saved without an account?

Yes. There's no sign-up anywhere in NFL Wordle. Your in-progress board, streak, best streak, win rate, and guess-count history all save automatically to your browser's local storage as you play. That also means progress doesn't follow you to a different browser or device, and clearing site data or using private/incognito mode will not save anything.
