TL;DR

The smash drives the shuttle downward at high speed. Players use it from the rear court or after forcing a short lift, then recover quickly because a blocked reply can reverse the attack.

How to hit it

Move behind the shuttle, turn the shoulders, reach high and contact in front of the body. A relaxed grip that tightens at impact creates speed while keeping the racket face stable.

Angle and placement

A straight smash attacks the defender’s body or sideline. A cross-court smash creates a wider angle but travels farther, giving the opponent more time to read it.

Defending a smash

Defenders lower the stance, hold the racket in front and use a short block, lift or drive. Returning safely is often more valuable than trying a spectacular counterattack.

Common mistakes

Hitting from behind the body, falling backward and swinging only with the arm reduce accuracy. Footwork and recovery position make the shot repeatable.
