TL;DR

A rookie is normally a player in their first season of top-level professional competition. The formal definition belongs to the league, so a player with overseas or minor-league experience may still qualify.

Rookie versus beginner

Rookie describes a player’s status in a competition, not their skill level. A highly experienced international athlete can be a rookie in a new league, while a talented amateur is not automatically a professional rookie.

Rookie awards and records

Many leagues name a rookie of the year and maintain rookie records. Those awards are separate from MVP voting and may use different eligibility rules.

Why definitions differ

Leagues need a consistent cutoff for draft classes, contracts and prior appearances. Check the official competition policy before comparing rookie seasons across sports.

Rookie status can end quickly

After the eligibility window closes, a player may still be young but is no longer a rookie under that league’s award rules.
