What Is a Bye Week? Sports Schedule Meaning
On this page5
TL;DR
A bye week is a week without a scheduled game. Teams use it for recovery, coaching and preparation, while fans and fantasy managers must account for the missing game when comparing weekly output.
Regular-season bye
The team does not play that week but remains in the standings. Coaches can reduce contact work, review film and address injuries. The extra rest can help some players, although a long break can also disrupt rhythm.
Playoff bye
A playoff bye means a team advances past an opening round without playing. It is earned through the competition’s seeding or qualification rules, not simply by requesting rest.
Fantasy football impact
Players on a bye produce no game statistics that week. Fantasy managers should check the schedule before setting lineups and plan replacement depth.
How to plan around a bye
Check the schedule before drafting, keep a replacement option available and avoid dropping a strong player solely because of one idle week.
