The standout contrast is the car philosophy. F1 is a constructor series where each team designs its own machine, so a chunk of performance comes from engineering budgets. IndyCar hands everyone the same Dallara chassis, so the racing is tighter and the results lean more on the driver and strategy.

Why F1 is faster on road courses

Why IndyCar wins on ovals

Ovals flip the equation. On a superspeedway like Indianapolis, teams strip downforce for minimum drag and let the cars run flat out. With slipstreaming through packs of traffic, IndyCars sustain speeds above 230 mph, higher than F1 reaches on any circuit.

It is also arguably the more dangerous discipline. Drivers race wheel to wheel, inches from a concrete wall, at those speeds for two hours. F1 has no direct equivalent on its calendar, which is a big reason the two series feel so different to watch.

The money and the career ladder

The financial gap is enormous. Top F1 drivers earn up to around $70 million a year, while most IndyCar drivers make between roughly $500,000 and $2 million. F1’s global audience, sponsorship and prize pool dwarf IndyCar’s, and team budgets follow the same pattern.
