The veteran number is a negotiated range. It does not mean every experienced player gets $22,850. The fixed tier and both ends of the veteran range are scheduled amounts in the CBA for the 2026 league year.

The 18-week figures are simple weekly-rate calculations. A player signed after Week 4, released during the season or promoted to an active roster will have a different total.

Who gets the fixed rate and who can negotiate?

The pay split follows accrued seasons. A player with two or fewer accrued seasons receives the fixed weekly amount. Once a player has more than two, the practice-squad contract can be negotiated within the CBA’s veteran minimum and maximum.

An accrued season is a labor-agreement status, not merely a calendar year in which a player attended camp. That is why two players of similar age can fall into different pay categories.

The CBA also says practice-squad contracts do not include bonuses, incentives or guarantees. A quoted “season salary” should therefore not be read like the guaranteed value on a star player’s contract.

How many practice squad players can a team carry?

For 2026, each club has 16 standard practice squad positions. NFL Football Operations says a club may receive a 17th spot for a qualified International Player Pathway player.

Up to six of the standard positions can be filled by players with unlimited experience. The remaining spots are governed by the CBA’s less-experienced eligibility categories. This mix lets teams develop younger players while keeping a smaller group of veteran reserves ready for injuries.

That structure is easy to misstate as “every team has a 17-man practice squad.” Sixteen is the normal limit; the extra place depends on the international pathway designation.

What happens when a player is elevated?

A club can elevate up to two practice squad players to the active/inactive list for a game. An elevated player receives the applicable minimum active-roster salary for that week, which is higher than the ordinary practice-squad amount.

A player can use the elevation mechanism for up to three games during the season. A fourth appearance generally requires the club to sign that player to the active roster. That is the meaningful financial step: active-roster service changes the weekly pay and can affect benefits and accrued-season status.

The route is not always one-way. A player may be elevated, return to the practice squad after the game, later be released, or be signed by another club to its active roster. The weekly transaction log is why an individual’s final earnings rarely match a neat 18-week multiplication.

Can another NFL team sign a practice squad player?

Yes, but it must sign that player to its active roster rather than move the player directly onto a different practice squad. This possibility is part of the job’s uncertainty and part of its opportunity: a good week of practice can lead to a roster place elsewhere.

Teams also use protections and elevations under the current roster rules, so the exact transaction matters. A generic “called up” headline does not always mean the player signed a permanent active-roster contract.

How the salary fits into an NFL roster budget

Practice-squad players work in the same building and prepare the active roster by running opponent looks, but their contracts belong to a separate roster category. Their pay is therefore much lower than the league minimum for a player on the active roster.
