Golf club loft is the angle of the clubface, and it rises steadily from a driver (around 9–12°) through the woods, hybrids and irons to the wedges (up to about 60°). A traditional iron set climbs roughly 3–4° per club, from a 3-iron near 21° to a pitching wedge near 46°. But there is no single standard: “strong” modern lofts have shifted the numbers, so two 7-irons can differ by a full club.

Why loft matters more than the number on the sole
Loft controls two things a golfer cares about: how high the ball launches and how far it carries. Less loft sends the ball lower and further; more loft sends it higher and shorter, with more backspin to stop it on the green. That trade-off is the whole logic of a golf set — each club covers a slice of distance.

Driver, fairway wood and hybrid lofts
Drivers sit lowest, usually 9° to 12°, and most modern heads are adjustable a degree or two either way. A 10.5° driver is the common middle ground; slower swingers often benefit from more loft to get the ball airborne.
Fairway woods rise from there — a 3-wood near 15°, a 5-wood near 18°, a 7-wood near 21°. Iron lofts and the “strong loft” shift
For decades a 7-iron was around 34°. Then manufacturers began strengthening lofts to sell distance: a modern game-improvement 7-iron can be 28–30°. The Ping G430 irons, for instance, run stronger than a classic blade set.
The catch is that a “longer” 7-iron is really a 6-iron wearing a 7 on the sole. You gain carry but you also raise the loft you need at the bottom of the bag, which is why strong-lofted sets push more golfers toward carrying an extra wedge. Distance is not free — it moves the gapping problem somewhere else.
Wedge lofts and how to gap them
Wedges are where scoring happens, so gapping them evenly matters. The rule of thumb is to keep a consistent 4–6° step from your pitching wedge down to your highest-lofted wedge.

If your PW is 45° and your next wedge is a 56° sand wedge, you have an 11° hole in the middle of your short game — far too big. A 50° gap wedge closes it. How to check your own lofts
Every manufacturer publishes a spec sheet, and it is worth reading before you assume your set matches this chart. Two things throw golfers off: strong lofts making a club “longer” than expected, and custom fitting, where a club can be bent a degree or two stronger or weaker to smooth out a gap.
A good fitter measures the lofts you actually own on a loft-and-lie machine, then adjusts for even yardage gaps rather than tidy round numbers. That is the real goal — consistent spacing you can trust, not matching a textbook.
