EPA simply measures the before-and-after. If a play moves the team from a situation worth 2.0 expected points to one worth 3.4, that play was worth +1.4 EPA. Why yards are not enough
The problem with raw yardage is that it ignores context. A 5-yard completion is a triumph on third-and-3 and a failure on third-and-10, yet the box score records both as “5 yards.” EPA fixes that by grading plays against the situation. Because it is rooted in expected points, a play that keeps a drive alive is rewarded and a play that stalls it is penalized, even if the yardage looks identical.
That is also why EPA can be negative. Any play that leaves the offense worse off than before — an incompletion, a sack, a run that comes up short on third down, and above all a turnover — produces negative EPA. A red-zone interception can swing several points on one snap, because it does not just cost the offense its own expected points; it hands expected points to the other team.
A worked example
Expected points come from historical data. Picture these rough values (real models vary by source, but the shape holds):
- First-and-10 at the offense’s 40: worth about +1.8 expected points.
- The quarterback completes a 25-yard pass to the opponent’s 35.
- First-and-10 at the 35: worth about +3.0 expected points.
EPA for that play: 3.0 − 1.8 = +1.2.
Now the opposite. Same starting spot, +1.8 expected points, but this time the pass is intercepted and returned to midfield. The opponent now has good field position worth, say, +1.5 expected points to them. From the offense’s view that is roughly −1.8 (their own expected points gone) minus the value handed over — a single play worth several negative EPA. One number captures both the lost opportunity and the gift to the defense.
EPA per play: the number that matters
Totaling EPA rewards teams for simply running more snaps, so the standard efficiency measure is EPA per play — total EPA divided by number of plays.

A positive EPA per play means an offense, on average, improves its scoring outlook every time it snaps the ball. The best offenses in a season live north of +0.15; the worst sit clearly negative. Because passing plays generate more EPA per play than runs in the modern game, EPA is a big part of the analytical case for throwing more, especially on early downs.
Why EPA matters, and its limits
EPA has become the backbone of modern football analysis because it converts everything — passes, runs, sacks, penalties, field position — onto one scale that ties directly to scoring. It is how analysts judge whether a play call, a quarterback, or a whole offense is actually efficient rather than just busy.
It is not the last word. EPA describes what happened, not always who deserves credit — a quarterback’s EPA is boosted by receivers and blockers, just as it is dragged down by drops. It can be noisy in small samples, and the expected-points model itself is an estimate that differs slightly between sources. That is why it is usually read alongside opponent-adjusted measures.
