What are the dimensions of a lacrosse field?

There is no single “lacrosse field” — the men’s and women’s games use different footprints, and the indoor box game is smaller again. Under the NCAA men’s rules, the men’s field is fixed at 110 by 60 yards. Women’s field lacrosse, governed in the US by USA Lacrosse and internationally by World Lacrosse, is defined by goal spacing rather than one rigid rectangle, which is why you see a range.

The playing surface is grass or artificial turf. A midfield line splits the field in half, and each end holds a goal ringed by a crease and, in the men’s game, a restraining box that governs the lacrosse offsides rule.

The men’s field is the tidiest to state:

The 15 yards behind each goal matter more than they sound. Women’s lacrosse field dimensions — and why it’s bigger

Women’s field lacrosse is played on a larger, more open surface. NCAA women’s rules put the goals 90 to 100 yards apart, with 10 to 20 yards behind each, giving a playing area that commonly lands around 120 yards long. Width runs up to 70 yards. The regulation window is generous — roughly 110×60 at the minimum and 140×70 at the maximum — but a typical college women’s field measures close to 120 by 70 yards.

Why the difference? Women’s lacrosse descended from a version with no fixed boundaries; the field was simply the space available, and play flowed until it naturally stopped. As the rules formalised, that open, spread-out character stayed. With 12 players a side rather than the men’s 10, and a game built on passing lanes over heavy contact, the extra room fits the sport. Lacrosse field vs football field

This is the comparison most newcomers reach for, because so many lacrosse games are played on lined football fields. Here is how a men’s lacrosse field measures up against an American football field:

A men’s lacrosse field is slightly longer in the ways that count and noticeably wider than a football field. A football field is 120 yards end zone to end zone but only 53⅓ yards wide, so a lacrosse field’s extra 7 yards of width more than makes up for its shorter length. Bigger: soccer or lacrosse?

Soccer wins. A regulation soccer pitch is commonly around 115 by 75 yards — roughly 8,600 square yards — against the men’s lacrosse field’s 6,600. That is nearly a third more grass. The women’s lacrosse field closes the gap and can rival a smaller soccer pitch, but the men’s game is clearly the more compact of the two. Box and youth field sizes

Youth and 7v7 lacrosse has no universal size. Small-sided games are usually played across a slice of a full field or a modified pitch near 60 by 35 yards, scaled to the age group. Marking out your own field

If you are laying lines for a club or school, start from the goals and work outward: set them at the regulation spacing for your version, mark the creases at a 9-foot radius, then measure the sidelines and end lines to hit the totals above. The men’s numbers are fixed, so get the 80-yard goal spacing right and the rest follows.
