The Los Angeles Lakers have the most NBA Finals appearances of any team, with 32 through the 2024 Finals. The Boston Celtics are second with 23, and no other franchise is close, with the Golden State Warriors a distant third on 11.

Reaching the NBA Finals means surviving the deepest playoff bracket in team sports, so appearing there dozens of times is the clearest signal of sustained excellence. The record holders: Lakers 32, Celtics 23

The Lakers and Celtics have defined the NBA’s championship history for more than 70 years. The Lakers’ 32 appearances span the franchise’s Minneapolis origins, the Showtime era of the 1980s and the Kobe Bryant and LeBron James teams of the modern game. The Celtics’ 23 include Bill Russell’s 1960s dynasty, the Larry Bird era and their 2024 title run. Together the two clubs have appeared in well over half of all NBA Finals ever played.

That dominance is why the two are so far ahead of the field. The gap between second-place Boston and third-place Golden State is larger than the total number of Finals most franchises have ever reached.

Bill Russell and the individual record

While the team record belongs to the Lakers, the player record belongs to Boston’s Bill Russell, who reached 12 NBA Finals and won 11 of them, the most titles of any player in the sport. Russell’s dominance came in a smaller league with fewer playoff rounds, but 12 Finals in 13 seasons remains a level of team success no player has matched. Several of his Celtics teammates, including Sam Jones and John Havlicek, also piled up Finals appearances during that dynasty. The Lakers-Celtics rivalry

The two leaders have also met each other in the Finals 12 times, the defining rivalry of the league. Boston won most of the 1960s meetings behind Russell, the Lakers answered in 2010, and the 2008 and 2010 series reintroduced the rivalry to a new generation.
