The Celtics also bookended the streak with more titles, winning in 1957 and again in 1968 and 1969, but the eight straight from 1959 to 1966 is the unbroken run that stands alone.

How Boston strung together eight in a row

The engine of the streak was Bill Russell. He arrived in Boston in 1956 and turned the Celtics into a defensive machine built around his rebounding and shot-blocking, winning 11 championships in 13 seasons. Every one of the eight consecutive titles ran through him.

Around Russell sat a Hall of Fame core and one of the great coaches in Red Auerbach, who managed the roster and the rotations that kept the run going. By the end, Russell was doing both jobs at once, serving as player-coach for the final titles of his career. The 1959-to-1966 NBA barely resembles the current one, and the differences are why the record is safe. The league had only eight or nine teams for most of the run, so the path to a title cleared fewer rounds and fewer genuine rivals. There was no draft lottery spreading talent around, no salary cap limiting what a team could pay, and no free agency letting stars walk to a contender.

Since the Celtics, the tallest anyone has stood is three straight.
