The World Cup Golden Boot is awarded to the leading scorer at each FIFA World Cup. Kylian Mbappé won the most recent one in 2022 with 8 goals, and the single-tournament scoring record still belongs to France’s Just Fontaine, who hit 13 in 1958.

The award has honored the top scorer at every tournament since 1930, though it was only formally named the Golden Boot in 1982. Some winners lifted the trophy too; many did not. Below is the full year-by-year list, plus the story of the record that has outlasted every era of the game.

Six goals has been enough to win the Boot in most modern tournaments. Only three winners since 1970 — Ronaldo, and Mbappé twice over — have reached eight.

Just Fontaine’s 13 goals: the record that won’t fall

Fontaine scored 13 goals in a single World Cup in 1958, a figure that looks almost impossible now. He managed it in six matches, including four in the third-place play-off against West Germany. No player since has come within four of that total in one tournament.

The record survives partly because the game has changed. Defences are tighter, group stages are shorter for the top teams, and no modern striker gets the run of high-scoring matches Fontaine did. Ronaldo’s 8 in 2002 and Mbappé’s 8 in 2022 are the best modern efforts, and both fall well short. How the Golden Boot is decided

The award goes to whoever scores the most goals across the tournament. When players finish level, the tiebreakers kick in: assists first, then fewer minutes played, which rewards efficiency.

That is why Thomas Müller took the 2010 Boot despite four other players also reaching five goals — his three assists settled it. The rule can produce a winner who was not the outright leader on goals alone, which is a quirk worth knowing before arguing about who “really” finished top scorer in a tight year.

Golden Boot, Golden Shoe and the all-time record

Three separate honors get muddled here. The World Cup Golden Boot is a single-tournament prize. The European Golden Shoe is a yearly award for the top scorer across Europe’s domestic leagues, adjusted for league strength — a club record, not an international one.

Then there is the all-time World Cup scoring record, held by Miroslav Klose with 16 goals across four tournaments. Klose never won a single Golden Boot outright as the runaway top scorer; he simply kept scoring across 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. Consistency over four World Cups and a hot streak in one are different achievements, and the record book treats them as such.
