Rory McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup more than anyone, with three titles in 2016, 2019 and 2022. The PGA Tour’s season-long championship has been decided every year since 2007, and the most recent champion on record is Scottie Scheffler, who won it in 2024.

How the playoff format works

The FedEx Cup is a points race across the full PGA Tour season. Win or finish high in regular events and you bank points; the leaders then advance into the playoffs, where the field narrows in stages down to the top 30 for the Tour Championship.

From 2019 through 2024 that finale used a starting-strokes system: the points leader teed off the week already at 10 under par, with the rest of the field staggered behind, so the season-long race and the Tour Championship became a single event. In 2025 the Tour scrapped that idea and returned to a level 72-hole stroke-play finish, where everyone starts even and the winner takes the Cup. The change was made because fans found the head-start system hard to follow.

The bonus that comes with the Cup

The FedEx Cup is also one of the richest prizes in golf. The champion earned a $10 million bonus when the competition launched in 2007, and the figure has climbed steadily since into the higher eight figures, on top of whatever the player wins in tournament prize money.

The money is spread down the standings too, so a strong playoff run pays off even for players who do not win the Cup. That structure is deliberate: it keeps the whole top-30 field motivated at the Tour Championship, not just the leader.
