Premier League Golden Boot Winners

Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah share the Premier League Golden Boot record with four wins each. Henry set the mark first, in his Arsenal prime; Salah drew level when he finished top scorer in 2024-25. No one else in the competition’s history has won it more than three times.

The award goes to whoever scores the most league goals in a single Premier League season. It is a season-long count, so form over 38 games matters more than one hot month, and a striker on penalty duty holds an edge. Who has won the most Premier League Golden Boots

The multiple winners are a short list, because winning it even once means outscoring every other forward in the league across a full season.

Henry’s run came in a five-season window when Arsenal built their attack around him, including the unbeaten 2003-04 season. Salah’s four are spread across seven seasons at Liverpool, two of them shared awards. Two of the seven multiple winners are still active in Haaland and Salah, so this list can still move.

Henry and Salah: the shared record

Henry reached four first and held the record alone for close to two decades. His 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons were the peak, and he did it as a wide-drifting forward rather than a fixed number nine, which made the tally more unusual.

Salah caught him in 2024-25 by topping the scoring charts again for Liverpool, his fourth Golden Boot. He is the only player to win it in three different guises: as an out-and-out finisher, in shared seasons level with rivals, and as the standout scorer of a title-winning side. Because Salah is still playing, a fifth would move him clear of Henry outright.

The single-season scoring record

Winning the Golden Boot and setting the scoring record are not the same thing. The most goals in one Premier League season is Erling Haaland’s 36 for Manchester City in 2022-23, his debut season in England.

That figure clears the old benchmark. Alan Shearer’s 34 in 1994-95 and Andy Cole’s 34 in 1993-94 came in a 42-game season, when the league still ran with 22 clubs. Haaland’s 36 came over 38 games, so it is both the modern record and the outright high. Below him, Mohamed Salah’s 32 in 2017-18 is the best return in a 38-game season by anyone other than Haaland.

The winning total swings from year to year. Haaland’s 36 sits at one extreme; three of the last ten winners took it with 23, a reminder that in a tight season the Golden Boot can be won without a blockbuster count.

Why the award does not always follow the title

The Golden Boot rewards goals, not trophies, so it regularly lands outside the champions. Jamie Vardy won it in 2019-20 as Leicester finished fifth, and Kevin Phillips won it in 1999-2000 with a Sunderland side in mid-table. Harry Kane collected three at Tottenham without lifting the Premier League title.

That gap is the point of the award. It measures the best individual scoring season, whoever posts it, which is why a striker in a struggling side can still finish on top.
