The list is dominated by edge rushers, with interior stars like John Randle the exception. Michael Strahan, seventh here, also holds the single-season record of 22.5 sacks, set in 2001.

Reggie White and the closest chase

Reggie White, the “Minister of Defense,” pushed Smith to the wire with 198 sacks across a Hall of Fame career with the Eagles and Packers. For a time White held the record himself, and the two-sack margin between him and Smith is one of the narrowest gaps at the summit of any NFL record. They remain the only players above 190.

Deacon Jones and the missing history

The record book’s biggest gap is Deacon Jones, the Los Angeles Rams star who coined the term “sack” and terrorized quarterbacks in the 1960s and early 1970s. Because his career ended before official tracking began in 1982, none of his sacks count toward the record. Researchers have credited him with more than 170 unofficially, and some estimates run even higher, which is why many argue the true all-time leader may never appear on the official list.
