A former Super Bowl head coach is now the face of an Arizona high-school football row, and the video is only the last scene of it. Lovie Smith, working on the Desert Ridge High School staff of his son Miles, was filmed berating parents before Friday’s home game in Mesa, the New York Post reports. The argument started a week earlier, in a game the Jaguars won: their starting quarterback changed a play, his coach called it disrespect, and within days 13 players were off the team.

How did a changed play empty a roster?

Gunner Brewer audibled. His mother Marie Brewer told the Arizona Republic that during the 14-12 win at Vail Cienega on October 2, Brewer changed the play he had been given, something she says the previous offensive coordinator, let go after a September loss, had allowed him to do when he saw something in the defence. On Monday, October 5, head coach Miles Smith told him he felt disrespected and that he was off the team. She says Brewer had never had a disciplinary issue before. The Republic sought comment from Miles Smith, athletic director Kevin Swann and the district’s athletic director, and had received none as of Tuesday.

Why did 12 teammates walk out?

Because they were asked, in effect, to vote. Two days after the dismissal the team was brought together to discuss it, and offensive lineman Will Stark stood up and asked who wanted their quarterback back. A large group raised their hands, the Republic reports. Stark’s mother Kristie says an assistant coach then told the players that if they did not like the decision, they could leave. Twelve players, five of them seniors, left the meeting. They were suspended, their banners came down, and their equipment was taken out of their lockers. It is the same shape as the week’s other football authority row, a governor’s order and the NCAA president answering back in Ohio: a decision made on a coach’s or an institution’s authority, then tested by the people it was made about.

What happened on Friday night?

The suspended players came back to help. They showed up for the home game against Mesa Red Mountain to support the teammates who stayed and to help set up the inflatable jaguar the team runs through, and the coaching staff forbade them from helping, the Post reports. They sat in the stands instead, and Desert Ridge lost 49-7. The video comes from the same evening: per The Main Event Show’s reporting, cited by the Post, equipment had been thrown on the locker room floor, a parent photographed the scene, and Lovie Smith was filmed berating parents over it. A high-school programme’s internal discipline became a viral clip because the most famous coach in the building was the one raising his voice. Arizona high-school football has already had one official-versus-player confrontation go national this month, when a Missouri referee was suspended indefinitely after grabbing a player on video; this one runs the other way, from the coaching staff outward.

How long are the players out, and is anyone talking?

The season, unless Tuesday’s meeting moves it. Swann told a parent in an October 12 voice message that the 12 were suspended for the rest of the season but could return for winter workouts and next season, the Republic reports, and he had already sent parents a letter with his findings. Will Stark was told on Monday that he is off the team for the rest of the season. On Tuesday, though, Kristie Stark met principal Scott Smith and texted the Republic that the conversation was great and that he was very receptive, the first sign of a door opening. The coaches have said nothing publicly, a silence with a family resemblance to the leaked-texts row at Michigan, where the apology came from the player first.

What happens next at Desert Ridge?

A game, on Thursday, with a thinned roster. Desert Ridge is 2-5 and hosts Corona del Sol on October 15, the Republic reports, playing out a schedule its suspended seniors will watch from the stands unless the district intervenes. The questions the school has not answered are the ones parents are now asking in public: whether a walkout invited in a team meeting should end 12 seasons and careers, and why the response to a photographed locker room came from a volunteer assistant with a Super Bowl on his record rather than from the school. The Smiths built the programme’s authority on a single word, disrespect. The video is what that authority looks like once it leaves the meeting room. It sits in a month where football keeps producing these tests of who gets to decide, from a flag-happy crew row in Tampa Bay to a Mesa locker room.

Frequently asked questions

Why was quarterback Gunner Brewer dismissed from the Desert Ridge team?+

According to his mother Marie Brewer, speaking to the Arizona Republic, Brewer changed a play during the Jaguars' 14-12 win at Vail Cienega on October 2. She says the former offensive coordinator, who was let go in September, had allowed Brewer to call audibles. On Monday, October 5, coach Miles Smith told Brewer he felt disrespected and that he was off the team. She says Brewer had never had a disciplinary issue.

Two days after the dismissal, the team met to discuss it. The Arizona Republic reports offensive lineman Will Stark stood up and asked who wanted Brewer back, and a large group raised their hands. The New York Post reports the elder Smith, who works on his son's Desert Ridge staff, was filmed berating parents before Friday's home game against Mesa Red Mountain. The Post, citing The Main Event Show's reporting, says the confrontation followed equipment being thrown on the locker room floor and a photo of the scene being taken.

How long are the suspensions?+

For the season, on the latest word. Athletic director Kevin Swann said in a voice message to a parent on October 12 that the players were suspended for the rest of the season but could return for winter workouts and next season, the Arizona Republic reports. Seven of the 12 are underclassmen. Swann also sent parents a letter detailing his findings after meeting players and coaches.

Have the coaches or the school responded?+

Not publicly, as of the Republic's Tuesday reporting. The Republic sought comment from Miles Smith, athletic director Kevin Swann and Gilbert Public Schools athletic director Stephen McDowell and had no response. On Tuesday, Kristie Stark met principal Scott Smith and texted the Republic that it was a great conversation and that he was very receptive.

Who is Lovie Smith and what is he doing at a high school?+

Lovie Smith coached the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans in the NFL, taking Chicago to a Super Bowl, and his last NFL job ended in 2023.
