Two clicks decide more of your Dream11 score than the other nine players combined. Get the captain and vice-captain multipliers right, and a middling team can still cash. Get them wrong, and a perfectly picked XI won’t save you. The rule is simple to state: put your 2x on the player most likely to have the biggest individual day.

Why the Captain Pick Matters More Than Any Other

A player who racks up 80 fantasy points gives you 160 as captain. The same player picked as a normal squad member gives you 80. That 80-point gap from a single decision can outweigh several other selections you got slightly wrong. Nothing else in your lineup carries that kind of leverage.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection Framework

FactorWhat to look for
Recent formConsistent scorers over the last 3–5 matches
Role in the match-upOpener facing a weak bowling attack; top-order batter on a flat pitch
All-round contributionPlayers who bat AND bowl give two chances to score
Venue and conditionsSpin-friendly pitch favours a spinner captain; seaming conditions favour a pace bowler
Opposition weaknessExploit a bowling attack weak against left-handers, or a batting order exposed to spin
Pitch reportHigh-scoring ground = lean towards batters; bowler-friendly = consider a fast bowler

All-Rounders as Captains

All-rounders make reliable captain picks because they can score from two different disciplines in the same match. A top all-rounder batting at six and bowling four overs can still post a big number even if one half of his game has a quiet day. When conditions suit both batting and bowling, an in-form all-rounder is usually the safest place to put your multiplier.

Differential Captain Strategy

In a contest with thousands of entries, captaining the same obvious name as everyone else means you can’t separate yourself from the pack when he delivers, since everyone gets the same boost. A differential captain, someone less commonly picked who you think is underrated for the conditions, can jump you up the leaderboard fast if he comes off. It’s a bigger swing in both directions.

Smaller contests, head-to-head or small private leagues, usually reward the safer, more obvious pick instead.

Vice-Captain: Your Backup Bet

Treat your vice-captain as your second-strongest conviction, not an afterthought. The 1.5x multiplier still moves the needle: a 60-point vice-captain nets you 90. A few things worth doing:

  • If your captain is a batter, lean toward an all-rounder or a strong bowler for vice-captain.
  • Spread your two multipliers across different match-ups so both don’t go quiet in the same passage of play.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Picking a player who might not play. Check the confirmed playing eleven before the deadline, every time.
  • Picking the priciest player out of habit. Price reflects past form, not what happens today.
  • Ignoring the toss. It can flip whether a batter or bowler is the smarter captain call; wait for toss news when you can before locking in.

Frequently asked questions

How many points does the Dream11 captain get?+

The captain earns 2x (double) the fantasy points they score in the match. The vice-captain earns 1.5x.

Should I pick an all-rounder as Dream11 captain?+

All-rounders are popular captain choices because they earn points from both batting and bowling, giving more opportunities to accumulate a big score. However, if a specialist batter or bowler is in exceptional form and likely to play a large role, they can be the better pick.

Can I change my Dream11 captain after the match starts?+

No. Once the deadline passes (typically when the first ball is bowled), your captain and vice-captain are locked in. Always confirm your selection before the deadline.
