Christian Watson spent the middle of Thursday night’s game in a hospital, and finished it on the field. The Packers receiver was taken by ambulance for precautionary testing after a chest injury on a 53-yard catch against Carolina, then returned to Lambeau Field in the same vehicle, re-entered the game late in the third quarter and finished with eight catches for 113 yards in Green Bay’s 27-19 win.

What happened to Christian Watson?

He landed on the ball, and it got him in the ribs. With 9:19 left in the second quarter, Jordan Love dropped a 53-yard pass into Watson’s hands at the Carolina 26-yard line, the New York Post reports, and Watson was hit hard by Panthers defensive backs Zakee Wheatley and Will Lee III as he secured it. He stayed down on the Lambeau grass with his chest facing the sky, then got up under his own power, was checked in the blue medical tent, and walked to the locker room before climbing into an ambulance, still in his uniform.

The Packers first listed him as questionable with a chest injury, then said he was being taken to a local hospital for precautionary testing, Reuters reports. Prime Video showed him climbing into the back of the ambulance shortly after walking to the locker room, and sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung reported the hospital trip on the broadcast. For a player with Watson’s injury history, and a team already without Jayden Reed for the season after a neck injury, the sight of the ambulance set off the worst assumptions. The next hour proved them wrong.

How did he get back into the game?

Through a CT scan, a clearance, and an ambulance ride back. Watson said at the hospital he underwent tests including a CT scan, AP reports, and that the scan did not show any internal bleeding. Everything else checked out, so he was cleared to return to Lambeau Field. He came running out of the tunnel and jogged back to the Packers sideline with 6:56 left in the third quarter, to a roaring ovation from the home crowd, and re-entered the game with 4:01 left in the quarter.

The Packers had listed him as questionable with a chest injury when he left, Reuters reports. He caught a short pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, after re-entering the game late in the third. The 53-yard catch had set up a Jacobs touchdown that put Green Bay ahead for good in the second quarter, AP reports, so Watson’s night already mattered before the return made it a story.

What did Watson say afterward?

He said he never wanted to go to the hospital, and explained exactly why the staff insisted. Watson told Prime Video after the game that he was initially spitting blood on the field, the New York Post reports, so the medical staff wanted to make sure there was no internal bleeding in his chest. He said he told them he was feeling better once he caught his breath, and that he was praying it was good enough for him to come back out. On SportsCenter he put the mechanism simply: he landed on the ball, and it got him in the ribs.

He also gave the night its strangest quote. AP reports Watson saying he felt like he was watching a wrestling video game as the cameras followed him coming out of the ambulance, calling the whole experience surreal. The cameras had indeed followed him twice: once leaving, once returning, both times in the same vehicle. Between those two shots, a player who looked finished for the night had a scan, a clearance and a second half.

What did the night cost the Panthers?

A cornerback, and more depth they could not spare. Lee, who came over the top of Watson on the play, went down holding his left hamstring, was helped to the sideline and then carted off the field, the New York Post reports, and he did not return. AP notes Carolina already had three other cornerbacks on injured reserve: Akayleb Evans, Mike Jackson and Jaycee Horn. Losing Lee on the same play that briefly removed Watson left the Panthers thinner at the exact position Green Bay attacks deepest.

The Panthers fought back anyway. Carolina trailed 27-10 in the third quarter, cut it to 27-19 on Bryce Young’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Coker with 5:37 left, AP reports, then lost the ball on downs at midfield with 2:41 remaining and never threatened again. The defeat dropped Carolina to 3-4 and put its hold on first place in the NFC South in danger. The Watson scare was the night’s most dramatic moment, but the Panthers’ problem was simpler: Green Bay sacked Young six times and held a fifth straight opponent to 20 points or fewer.

Why did the Packers need Watson back?

Because he is their deep threat, and the numbers say so. The 53-yarder was his third reception of 50 or more yards this season, the most in the NFL, AP reports, and since 2022 he has 11 catches of 50-plus yards, second in the league behind Nico Collins with 12. He had six catches for 100 yards before leaving, his third 100-yard game of the season, and finished with eight for 113, the team lead. Matthew Golden, who caught the 24-yard touchdown that made it 20-10, has his own history with the Packers’ season, from the no-flag dance that cost him a fine to the trip attempt against Chicago. On Thursday, Watson and Golden were the two receivers Love kept going back to, and both delivered.

The context extends beyond one game. Watson signed a four-year extension in June, and the Packers have built their receiving room around him and Golden after losing Reed. Thursday was also a reminder of how fragile that plan is: one landing on a football sent the team’s top deep threat to a hospital. The return mattered because it showed the plan surviving its own scare, not because the scare itself was unusual for Watson. Something similar happened last season at Denver on December 15, AP notes, when he went to hospital to check for broken ribs, the tests were negative, and he played in the next game.

What happens next?

New England, on November 8, and a rib to watch. Green Bay improved to 5-3 with the win and visits the Patriots next, AP reports, in a week that will test whether the broken rib Watson reported limits him in practice. The Packers have not announced any absence, and Watson’s own account was that everything checked out apart from the rib. Elsewhere in the league this week, the biggest move came in Chicago, where the Bears landed Jeffery Simmons from Tennessee a day after Simmons said he expected to stay. That trade reshaped the NFC North from afar on Thursday, while Watson’s return reshaped it from inside Lambeau. The Packers also have their own officiating history this season, from Tom Brady’s on-air blast during the Lions game, but Thursday needed no officials to make its point. A receiver went to hospital, came back, and helped win the game.
