wRC+ in baseball is weighted runs created plus: a single number that captures a hitter’s total offensive value, adjusts it for ballpark and league, and scales it so 100 is exactly average. A 130 wRC+ means the hitter created runs 30 percent better than the league average that year; an 85 means 15 percent worse. It is a FanGraphs staple and, for many analysts, the best all-in offensive rate stat available, because it values each hitting event by what that event is actually worth.

What it measures and how it is built

Most simple stats treat outcomes crudely. Batting average counts a home run the same as a single; OPS adds on-base and slugging as if they were equal. wRC+ starts from a better foundation: weighted on-base average (wOBA), which assigns every way of reaching base its real run value drawn from run-expectancy data. A home run is worth far more than a walk, a double more than a single, and the weights come from how much each event actually changes a team’s expected runs.

From there, wRC+ layers on two adjustments:

  • Park factor — corrects for whether the hitter’s home stadium inflates or suppresses offense.
  • League scaling — measures the hitter against the league-average run-creation rate, then rescales so 100 is average.

The full published formula is involved — it runs wOBA through weighted runs above average, folds in the league’s runs per plate appearance and a park correction, then divides by the league rate and multiplies by 100. You do not need to compute it by hand; the point is what it does. It answers “how many runs did this hitter create relative to an average hitter in a neutral park,” expressed as a clean percentage.

A worked example of reading it

Because the machinery is complex but the output is simple, the useful skill is interpretation. Say two hitters both post a .360 wOBA. One plays half his games in a hitter’s park, the other in a pitcher’s park. After the park adjustment, the pitcher’s-park hitter might land at a 135 wRC+ while the hitter’s-park player sits at 122 — the same raw production, but the harder environment earns more credit. That is the entire reason wRC+ exists: it refuses to reward a hitter for a friendly stadium.

Turned into plain terms, a 135 wRC+ means: for every 100 runs an average hitter would create in that many chances, this player created about 135.

The scale mirrors OPS+ on purpose — both center on 100 — but wRC+ is generally the sharper of the two because its wOBA base weights each event correctly instead of adding two rate stats together. The best single seasons in history have pushed into the 230s, more than double the league-average rate, which is why those years stand so far apart from everyone else’s.

Why wRC+ matters, and what it leaves out

wRC+ is the cleanest way to answer “how good was this hitter, everything considered, relative to their league and park.” It is era-neutral and stadium-neutral, so it travels across decades better than raw numbers ever could.

Its boundary is important: wRC+ is a hitting stat only. It says nothing about baserunning, stolen bases, or defense. A player with a 120 wRC+ who is also a plus defender and baserunner is far more valuable than a 120 wRC+ hitter who is a liability in the field, and wRC+ alone will not tell you that.
