Jaylen Brown has now said it himself, and that is what makes this round of the saga different. After dropping a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double in Philadelphia’s 114-109 win over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night, Brown addressed the claim that he demanded a trade out of Boston, and he left no room for interpretation. “I never demanded a trade. I never made a list of ultimatums. None of the sort. None of that is true.”

What did Brown say after the Pacers game?

He said he will not carry the allegation into his new chapter. “I’ve never had any issues with Scal. I love Scal,” Brown told reporters in Indianapolis, referring to former Celtic Brian Scalabrine. “But I guess he’s doing what he has to do. I can understand why he feels the need to do that. But I have no interest of letting any false allegations follow me into my next chapter here in Philadelphia.” He added that he wants to stay focused on what is in front of him with the 76ers, and that he will leave the questions for another time. The timing mattered: Brown spoke on the record, after a win, in a road arena, rather than through a statement.

What did Scalabrine claim?

On SiriusXM NBA Radio on Monday, Scalabrine said his understanding was that Brown went to the Celtics organization with a list of demands and demanded to be traded if the ultimatum was not met, and that Brown was rooting to be sent to Milwaukee. The claim landed hard because of who said it. Scalabrine won a title with Boston as a player and now works as an NBC Sports Boston analyst, so his words carried the weight of an insider account even though he framed them as his understanding. Brown’s camp moved fast, with a representative telling ESPN’s Kris Rhim the claim was “10000% a lie,” and saying Brown never asked to be traded to the Bucks and never submitted demands.

Did Scalabrine walk it back?

He did, partly, on the same day, and that retreat is now part of the record. On NBC Sports Boston’s pregame coverage on Monday night, Scalabrine said Brown “technically” did not demand to be traded. “I don’t know what the ultimatum was or the demands or whatever it was,” he said. “So technically, he did not demand to be traded. It was, ‘Do these things right here or else.’ And one of them might have been, ‘Give me the $140 million extension.’” He added that he had not gotten to the bottom of it and did not know it would become a story. Then on Tuesday he went back on SiriusXM and said Brown wants to be the victim in all of this, which kept the row alive long enough for Brown to answer it himself on Wednesday.

How does this fit the Brown and Tatum saga?

It is the latest chapter in a feud that has run all season between the former Celtics duo. Brown called cap on a Tatum trade story with an Instagram emoji earlier in October, and Tatum answered after beating the Knicks by saying there was no animosity and no beef. Brown then watched his Boston return from the locker room as fans called him dramatic, and a separate season-ending injury rumor about Brown had to be debunked after the preseason scare in which Embiid fell into Jaylen Brown. Tatum, asked a day before Brown spoke whether Brown called him after the trade and whether they have talked since, said only: “Listen, I’ve said my piece. I’m not making any more comments on that situation.”

What happens now?

Brown’s denial sets the terms, and the burden shifts back to Scalabrine. If Scalabrine has specifics behind the ultimatum claim, he has yet to produce them, and his own walk-back concedes he does not know what the demands were. Charles Barkley, meanwhile, has told both players to stop talking and play, arguing that every comment feeds the machine and makes the beef bigger than it is. Brown, for his part, says he is done with the questions during the season. The next fixed point is the reunion game on November 10, when Brown and Tatum share a court again, and whether either man has anything left to say by then.

Frequently asked questions

What did Jaylen Brown actually say?+

After the 76ers beat the Pacers 114-109 on Wednesday, Brown told reporters in Indianapolis: 'I never demanded a trade. I never made a list of ultimatums. None of the sort. None of that is true.' He added that he loves Scalabrine and has never had an issue with him, but he will not let false allegations follow him into his next chapter in Philadelphia.

What did Brian Scalabrine claim in the first place?+

On SiriusXM NBA Radio on Monday, Scalabrine said his understanding was that Brown demanded to be traded to the Celtics organization, presented a list of demands, and was rooting to be sent to Milwaukee. He framed it as an ultimatum: do these things, or trade me. The claim spread quickly because Scalabrine is a former Celtic and an NBC Sports Boston analyst.

Did Scalabrine stand by the claim?+

Only partly, and he retreated the same day. On NBC Sports Boston's pregame coverage on Monday night, Scalabrine said Brown 'technically' did not demand to be traded and admitted he did not know what the ultimatum or the demands were. He still insisted Brown presented some kind of ultimatum, and on Tuesday he said on radio that Brown wants to be the victim.

What did Brown's camp say before Brown spoke himself?+

A representative for Brown told ESPN's Kris Rhim that the trade-demand claim was '10000% a lie.' The representative said Brown never asked to be traded to the Bucks and never submitted a list of demands, and that his only request, once a trade became inevitable, was to have input on his destination.

How did the Brown trade actually happen?+

Boston traded Brown to Philadelphia this past offseason for Paul George, two first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and two second-round picks in 2028 and 2030. At the time, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Brown had not requested a trade and that the Celtics' front office initiated the move after talks with around ten teams.

What did Jayson Tatum say about the saga?+

Tatum refused to add fuel a day before Brown spoke, telling reporters he had said his piece and would make no more comments on the situation. He also declined to say whether Brown called him after the trade or whether the two have talked since. Brown's own denial now closes the loop on his side, at least for now.

Why does this denial matter more than the camp denial?+

Because it comes from Brown directly, on the record, after a game, rather than through a representative. The camp denial answered the claim; Brown's own words put his name to the answer and set the terms for his Philadelphia chapter. If Scalabrine produces specifics, the story reopens, but until then the denial stands as the last word.
