The NBA salary cap is a soft limit, roughly $154.6 million per team for 2025-26, that clubs are allowed to exceed by using specific exceptions built into the collective bargaining agreement. That “soft” part is everything. Unlike the NFL’s hard ceiling, an NBA team over the cap can keep adding players, which is why the cap is better understood as a starting point with escape hatches than a wall.

Soft cap versus hard cap

A hard cap, like the NFL salary cap, cannot be crossed under any circumstance; the roster has to fit under the number. The NBA cap is the opposite. Almost every good team is over it, and the CBA hands them named exceptions to sign players anyway.

The cap itself is derived from basketball-related income and recalculated every year, so it rises in most seasons as revenue grows. But the number alone tells you little, because the exceptions are where roster-building actually happens.

The main exceptions

Here are the tools an over-the-cap team leans on. Each exists so a capped-out club is not frozen out of the market, and the values reset every year, per the league’s CBA materials.

ExceptionWhat it doesRough 2025-26 value
Bird rightsRe-sign your own free agent over the cap, up to a max salaryUp to the player’s max
Early BirdRe-sign your own free agent after two seasons, smaller raiseSet formula
Non-taxpayer mid-levelSign an outside free agent while over the cap~$14.1M
Taxpayer mid-levelSmaller mid-level for teams deeper into the tax~$5.7M
Room exceptionFor teams under the cap after using their space~$8.8M
Bi-annual exceptionA smaller signing tool usable every other year~$5.1M

Bird rights, the most important exception

Bird rights are named after Larry Bird, and they are the single biggest reason NBA stars usually re-sign with their own team. A player earns full Bird rights after three seasons with the same club without leaving as a free agent, and those rights let the team pay him more, over more years, than any rival can offer, even if the team is already over the cap.

That built-in home-team advantage is why the smart play is almost always to develop and retain rather than chase. Our deeper explainer on Bird rights in the NBA unpacks the Early Bird and Non-Bird variations and how they change a player’s next contract.

The mid-level exception

If Bird rights are for keeping your own, the mid-level exception is for adding someone else’s. It is a fixed chunk of money an over-the-cap team can spend on an outside free agent, worth about $14.1 million in the non-taxpayer version for 2025-26. Teams deeper into the tax get a smaller taxpayer mid-level, and teams that dipped under the cap get a modest room exception instead. The mid-level is often the most valuable signing tool a contender has all offseason, because everything else is committed.

Cap space versus exceptions

There is a fork in the road every front office faces. A team can either stay under the cap and use its space to sign players outright, or go over the cap and rely on exceptions. You cannot do both at full strength: dipping under the cap wipes out the full mid-level and leaves only the smaller room exception. Most contenders choose to operate over the cap, keep their Bird rights, and build through exceptions, which live cap sheets like Spotrac’s NBA cap page track team by team.

Understanding the soft cap is step one; the real spending restrictions arrive higher up. Once a team’s payroll climbs past the tax line, it enters luxury tax territory, and above that sit the first and second aprons that can freeze picks and strip away these very exceptions. For how far individual deals push teams up that scale, see the most expensive NBA contract ever signed. Frequently asked questions

What is the NBA salary cap for 2025-26?+

The salary cap for 2025-26 is roughly $154.6 million per team. It is set from projected basketball-related income and reset every year, so it climbs most seasons as league revenue grows. It is a soft cap, which teams can and routinely do exceed.

What does a soft salary cap mean?+

A soft cap is a limit teams are allowed to cross, but only through specific exceptions written into the CBA. Unlike the NFL's hard cap, an NBA team over the cap can still add players using tools like Bird rights and the mid-level exception, rather than being blocked.

What are Bird rights in the NBA?+

Bird rights let a team re-sign its own free agent for more money than it could otherwise offer, even while over the cap. A player earns full Bird rights after three seasons with the same team without changing clubs as a free agent, which is why keeping your own stars is easier than signing others'.

What is the mid-level exception?+

The mid-level exception is a set chunk of money an over-the-cap team can use to sign a free agent. The non-taxpayer version is worth about $14.1 million in 2025-26; smaller taxpayer and room versions exist for teams deeper over the cap. It refreshes each season.

How is the NBA salary cap different from the luxury tax?+

The cap is the lower, soft line teams exceed with exceptions. The luxury tax is a higher line that costs real money per dollar to cross. A team can be well over the cap while still under the tax line, since the two thresholds are tens of millions apart.

Can an NBA team have a payroll below the cap?+

Yes, and it changes the tools available. A team under the cap uses its cap space to sign players outright and gets only a smaller room exception, not the full mid-level. Most contending teams operate over the cap and rely on exceptions instead of space.
