Freddy Peralta won the game that put Tampa Bay in the World Series on Monday night, holding Cleveland to one run over 5 1/3 innings in the Rays’ 7-3 win in Game 6 of the ALCS, and he took the series MVP award with him. The World Series starts Friday in Milwaukee, against the Brewers, the club that traded him away in January. Eleven weeks ago Peralta was a struggling Met with a 4.99 ERA; the pitcher both clubs moved on from is now the one the Series runs through.

How did Peralta pitch the pennant clincher?

He gave Tampa Bay 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball and a shutout into the sixth. Peralta allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three, and left after Chase DeLauter’s leadoff double and Nathaniel Lowe’s one-out RBI single cut the lead to 3-1, the Associated Press reports. The game opened up after him: Junior Caminero’s two-run homer made it 5-1 in the seventh, Cleveland forced in two runs in the eighth, and Yandy Diaz answered with a two-run homer for the 7-3 final. The bullpen game Cleveland ran against him, and the decision it answered, is recorded in this site’s account of Vogt saving Williams for a Game 7 that never came. Peralta finished the series 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA and was named ALCS MVP, theScore reports.

What did Peralta do earlier in the series?

He had already won Game 2 and worked out of the bullpen in Game 4. In Game 2 he threw six scoreless innings in a 3-1 win, allowing four hits with six strikeouts, and his average fastball velocity of 96.9 mph was a career best, ESPN reports. In Game 4 he entered in the sixth with a runner on and recorded two outs on nine pitches, on what would normally have been his bullpen day. He took a 0.79 postseason ERA into Game 6 and lowered his overall mark to 1.08 by the end of it. Cleveland’s side of this October has been a study in emergency pitching, from Gavin Williams closing one game and starting the next in the Division Series to the eight pitchers the Guardians used on Monday.

How did a pitcher traded twice in nine months end up here?

Milwaukee traded him in January, and the Mets traded him in August. The Brewers sent Peralta and Tobias Myers to New York on January 21, 2026 for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, a deal made with Peralta’s free agency due this fall. In New York the move failed in public: 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA across 22 starts and 113 2/3 innings, on a Mets team that finished 74-88. On August 2 the Mets sent him to Tampa Bay for three prospects, outfielder Aidan Smith, right-hander Gary Gill Hill and infielder Emilien Pitre. A price like that only makes sense if the buying club believes the problem is fixable, and Tampa Bay acted on that belief within days.

What did the Rays actually change?

They removed the changes New York had layered on and restored the 2025 version. In an early-August meeting in a room off the visitors’ clubhouse at Coors Field, pitching coach Kyle Snyder, bullpen coach Jorge Moncada, the catchers and front office staff went through his delivery, his pitch mix and his mentality, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reports. Moncada had spotted that Peralta had moved from pitching only out of the stretch, as he did in 2025, into an elaborate windup. He went back to the stretch, moved to the third-base side of the rubber, widened his stance, sped up his delivery, added leg-drive drills, raised his arm angle slightly and threw his changeup more. “Changes were made, but the changes were towards what he has been in the past,” Moncada said. The first start after the meeting, at altitude in the same park, allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. From there the line bent hard: 5-2 with a 3.25 ERA for Tampa Bay, three runs allowed across his last six regular-season starts, and the AL Pitcher of the Month award for September. Peralta’s own summary, given to MLB.com during the Division Series, is shorter: “Everything changed when I got traded. I’ve been treated here as a king, and I feel really good about it.”

Why does the World Series matchup cut so deep?

Because Milwaukee is where he was made. Peralta spent eight seasons with the Brewers, made his second All-Star team in 2025 and went 17-6 with a league-leading 17 wins and a 2.70 ERA that year. The Brewers traded him anyway, then won the National League without him, sweeping the Dodgers in an NLCS that included the decision to bench captain Christian Yelich for Game 1. What waits for him is a lineup that has faced him in the cage for years, in a park he knows, with Milwaukee holding home field after a 103-59 season. The Rays have not announced their rotation; the Associated Press notes Peralta could start Game 2 on regular rest or Game 3 in Tampa Bay, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel expects Game 2. Either way, he will start at least once against his first club, and twice if the Series goes long.

What is at stake beyond Peralta’s own story?

A first title for whichever club wins. This is Tampa Bay’s third World Series trip and Milwaukee’s second, and neither franchise has won one, which makes this the first Series guaranteeing a first-time champion since the Phillies and Royals met in 1980. The history both clubs are chasing is laid out in this site’s record of the most World Series wins. Deadline trades for struggling starters are usually depth moves dressed up as gambles. This one returned a pennant-clinching starter and a series MVP in 11 weeks, and the mechanism is the part worth keeping: Tampa Bay made a scouting judgement about which version of a pitcher was real, under deadline pressure, for three prospects. The World Series grades that judgement in the hardest setting available, against the club that made the opposite call twice.
