The championship leader will start the biggest weekend of his life from a sick bed, or at least from a rest day. Kimi Antonelli missed Thursday’s media day at the Mexico City Grand Prix as he recovers from a viral illness, Mercedes confirmed, with the FIA excusing him from his mandatory duties. Valtteri Bottas missed the day too, unwell, in a paddock hit by illness at the sharp end of a punishing tripleheader.

What did Mercedes say about Antonelli?

The statement was short and deliberately calm. “Kimi is feeling under the weather today as he recovers from a viral illness,” a Mercedes spokesperson said. “As a precaution, the FIA have excused him from his mandatory media duties to give him the chance to rest ahead of the weekend. We expect him to be back tomorrow.” That last line is the one that matters. Nothing in the statement suggests Antonelli is in doubt for Friday practice, let alone Sunday’s race, and the FIA excuse means his absence carries no penalty. Under the regulations, teams must formally notify the FIA media delegate when a driver cannot fulfil press commitments through illness, which shields Antonelli from any sanction for Thursday.

What is at stake on Sunday?

Everything, in the literal championship sense. Antonelli arrives in Mexico on the back of his win at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, with nine victories this season in only his second Formula 1 campaign after a difficult rookie year. The arithmetic is simple, and it is why this illness story travelled so fast. A top-nine finish on Sunday makes him world champion outright. If he scores no points, he still takes the title provided neither his Mercedes team-mate George Russell nor Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton wins the race. At 20, he would become the sport’s youngest world champion, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s 2010 record by around three years. That is the context behind the title math laid out before Austin, and it is why a missed press conference became headline news.

What happened with Bottas?

Cadillac announced Bottas’s absence shortly after Mercedes announced Antonelli’s, and the two statements read like mirror images. “Cadillac Formula 1 Team can confirm that Valtteri Bottas will unfortunately be unable to attend today’s media day in Mexico City as he is unwell,” the team said. “The team has taken the decision to allow him a day of rest, to support his recovery. This is a precautionary measure and does not currently affect his participation in the remainder of the race weekend. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if necessary.” There is an extra layer to the Bottas story: Sky reports rumours that his seat is under threat despite a multi-year deal understood to run to the end of 2027, after he has been outperformed by team-mate Sergio Perez, who reaches his 300th start at his home race.

Does the illness change Friday’s running order?

For Bottas, no, at least not in first practice. Bottas was already due to sit out FP1, with Colton Herta driving for Cadillac again in the session that is part of his push toward a 2027 race seat. For Antonelli, the plan is unchanged on paper: he is scheduled to drive on Friday while Fred Vesti replaces Russell for the opening session at Mercedes. Toto Wolff’s dismissal of favouritism claims earlier in the season underlined how closely Mercedes manages the two sides of its garage, and a fit Antonelli on Friday keeps that management straightforward.

What should fans watch next?

Friday practice first. If Antonelli is back in the car as Mercedes expects, Thursday becomes a footnote, the kind of precautionary rest day teams hand out on tripleheader weekends. If he is not, the story changes fast, because a driver cannot win a title from the medical room and the FIA medical delegate retains the authority to check fitness before clearing a return. Mexico City is the middle race of a second consecutive tripleheader, so fatigue is already part of the weekend before any virus enters the picture. Sunday decides the rest: ninth or better, or a Russell and Hamilton shutout, and Antonelli is champion at 20.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Antonelli miss media day?+

Mercedes said Antonelli is feeling under the weather as he recovers from a viral illness. As a precaution, the FIA excused him from his mandatory media duties to give him the chance to rest ahead of the weekend. The team added: 'We expect him to be back tomorrow,' pointing to Friday practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Is Antonelli's title bid in danger?+

Not on what the teams have said so far. Nothing in either statement suggests Antonelli will miss track action, and Mercedes expects him back on Friday. The risk is fitness, not availability: a driver chasing a title needs rest, hydration and a clear head, and a viral illness days before the race is the wrong kind of preparation.

How can Antonelli win the title on Sunday?+

A top-nine finish in Sunday's race clinches the championship outright. If he scores no points, he still becomes champion provided neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton wins the race. At 20 years old, he would become the sport's youngest world champion, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record by around three years.

What happened with Valtteri Bottas?+

Cadillac confirmed Bottas would miss Thursday's media day because he is unwell, saying the team took the decision to allow him a day of rest to support his recovery. The team stressed it is a precautionary measure that does not currently affect his participation in the rest of the weekend, and said it will provide updates if necessary.

Was Bottas due to drive on Friday anyway?+

Not in first practice. Bottas was already scheduled to sit out FP1, with Colton Herta driving for Cadillac again in the session. That is separate from the illness, but it means Cadillac's Friday plan does not change at the first session even while Bottas recovers.

Why are two drivers ill at the same race?+

Mexico City is the middle race of a second consecutive tripleheader, three race weekends in a row, which leaves little recovery time between events. Antonelli arrived from his win at the United States Grand Prix in Austin last weekend, and the paddock has been moving between continents on a compressed schedule.

What happens next?+

Friday practice is the first test: whether Antonelli is back in the car as Mercedes expects, and whether Bottas is fit for the rest of the weekend. Sunday's race then decides the title. If Antonelli finishes ninth or better, or if Russell and Hamilton both fail to win, he is world champion.
